Subaru recently took the wraps off its latest vehicle, the nicely designed but awkwardly named, Uncharted. Built in conjunction with Toyota, Uncharted is a battery-electric compact SUV that’s available in either front-wheel or all-wheel drive.

Uncharted will be available in three trim levels: Premium FWD, Sport AWD, and GT AWD. I got a first hand look a pre-production prototype of the GT AWD model at their reveal event in Manhattan and came away impressed. For a vehicle that’s seven inches shorter than the brand’s first SUV, Solterra, it offers a surprising amount of interior space. Four 6-footers can sit comfortably, with reasonable rear seat leg room. There’s also 25 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row, which is about the same as the Hyundai Kona EV and Kia Niro EV, two competitors that are similar in size to Uncharted.

Materials are exactly what we’ve come to expect from Subaru. Purposeful, clean, and utilitarian, with just a hint of style. Premium trim will be finished in the same cloth fabric as Solterra base model. The Sport and GT models will wear Subaru’s StarTex upholstery, which is ideal for a vehicle that’s designed to take its passengers in search of adventures. It’s durable, easy to clean, and provides comfortable surfaces. The seats are nicely contoured and I expect them to offer plenty of support. The steering wheel is rectangular to allow you to look over it for a clear view of the digital instrument panel which rests atop Uncharted’s dashboard close to the windshield. One nice little touch is the dual wireless charging stations, allows you to keep your phones topped up without cords getting in the way.

While pricing has not been announced, the single motor, front drive version will be the most affordable option, offering 221 horsepower and more than 300 miles of range on a single charge. The dual motor, all-wheel drive version makes 338 horsepower, will go 0-60 in five seconds, and official Subaru range estimates are 290 miles on a charge, though executives at the event told me that is a conservative number and it may well exceed 300 miles in real world testing. We shall see.

Uncharted marks the third of four vehicles that will round out Subaru’s EV lineup. Solterra has been re-engineered from the ground up for 2026 and we will have our drive review of that vehicle soon. Trailseeker, was unveiled at the 2025 New York Auto Show and is built on the same platform as Solterra, but with more rugged features an a little extra cargo space for those who as the name suggests, are interested in seeking out the trails. While no details have been released, Subaru executives confirmed that a fourth electric vehicle is on the way. Given the nature of the co-development relationship between Subaru and Toyota, our guess is that it will be based Highlander Electric which our sources report is on the way in 2027. We wouldn’t be surprised if this larger SUV has 3-rows and competes with the Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 9.
